Corozal, Cemaco, Panama
Corozal is an indigenous river community located on the Rio Chico river in the Cemaco region of Darien, Panama.
Currently, Solea Water has completed an assessment of the community and has drawn out the water system designs. During his internship at Solea, Chandler assisted in engineering and guiding community members to structure the water system. With this support, Corozal now has a functioning water system. Solea Water will continue its long-term relationship with the community to repair and guide during any further challenges.
Project: Municipal Water System
Project budget: $48,785
Project funding: Latter Day Saints Charities
Project Details
phase 1
In 2022, the needs assessment was conducted by Alan Foster to determine the infrastructure and budget needed for Corozal’s project. Once this was completed, the plans were drawn out according to this drone image of the community.
phase 2
Solea Water’s intern Chandler was sent into Corozal to bring the supplies and assist the community in engineering the water system. Members of the community were hands-on in the process and eager to complete construction.
PHASE 3
After completing the installation, we tested the system to ensure it pumped enough water for the community and lab-tested the water quality to ensure it was safe for the community. Our testing looked for high levels of heavy metals and bacteriological contaminants.
ONGOING WORK
As an organization committed to long-term partnerships with the communities in which we work, we routinely return to Corozal to help the water committee address any problems or maintenance issues they might have. These have included replacing worn-out pipes, cleaning the well, performing chlorine shocks, and fixing the pump.
