Wala, Darién, Panama

Wala is a community of about 1200 people and 139 households located in the Darien province of Panama. The people of the Kuna heritage have a community far back in the Comarca river, up on a hill. Missionaries from Morti live in Wala, which has led to the presence of Christians in the community and a community church. Most community people are reserved but desperate for help with their water system.

The residents of Wala have a non-functioning water infrastructure despite a significant investment from the government and other agencies. Currently, the residents go to a high-use river surrounding the village for their drinking water. People get their water from the river using jerry cans to carry water to their homes. The only latrines available are at the school.

The community of Wala shows a great need as the only water source for over 1000 people in the river, which is also used for bathing, play, laundry, etc. The community has shown a great knowledge of the need for and desire for a water system. Wala considers the project a worthwhile investment and understands its importance to the community's future.

Community SUpport

Solea Water developed a relationship with Wala in 2016. Upon their visit to the community, Solea conducted a community assessment. The need in Wala for a refurbished, clean water infrastructure using the community’s existing resources was established. However, the Panamanian government proceeded to fund and take ownership of redesigning the community’s water system.

Instead of constructing and redesigning the existing infrastructure, Solea water decided to support the community by investing in the training of the community’s water committee.
